it's reasons like this that I always ask young people about their job experience when I hire them, even for internships. so many people put their sports teams, clubs, and academic awards on their CVs and leave out working in a movie theater or bagging groceries. To me, it's all relevant, especially when I'm evaluating people who will report to me. I want to know that they've had a job that they could get fired from, where they had to show up on time, get along with coworkers, and take directions from a boss. Sure, a lot of that can be learned elsewhere, but there's something more about learning that on the job.Even after graduating college, I worked a couple of odd jobs, while independently learning the art of online marketing at writing for the internet. One of those was at a pediatric hospital where I worked as a Unit Coordinator. While there, there was hospital-wide discussion of new nurses and residences who had never held a paying job before, and how much more of a learning curve they had. It was that experience that led me years later to ask about any and all previous work experience in interviews.You can tell a lot about a candidate but what they say about it. And if they haven't worked for pay? Do they balk at the question and try to defend themselves, or do they acknowledge their privilege and hope that this position will give them that very experience they haven't yet had?Thanks Steve Huynh for posing this question to everyone!Oh and my first job? My co-parent Julianna Wilson began transitioning last year and far from letting it stop her, it has fueled her career. the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. This was my first job back after self-selecting out of full-time work to take care of my kids through the pandemic. Like so many women (4 million in the US alone), I put my family first. Bravo to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), for not just owning the past but recognizing that they will be sure to stumble in the future and opening up dialogue to help keep them accountable. When I worked in nonprofit, one of my proudest achievements was establishing ethical storytelling practices and conducting org-wide training. But I only got to that point after many of my own stumbles and a generous community who pointed those stumbles out to me.
