Helping others is a waste of time.Everyone must fend for themselves.I know some people who actually believe this. One of my friends, we'llcall her Susan lived by this. She refused to help audit newbie, John, because she believed it would slow down her progress on other projects. You see, she was swamped and stressed out herself. One day, she realized how isolated and defeated John felt and decided to help out.Often when we're struggling, we shut off from the world. You know, the whole "I'll handle it alone" thing. But that is probably the perfect time to help others. After a painful adjustment period, they were able to work better together. Not only did John's performance improve, but Susan found herself more engaged and satisfied with her role.It reminds me of something my grandmother used to say...𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱.I used to think she meant to subtly hint to others that you need help. She clarified later with...𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲.I get it now.But how do we plant seeds?S - Spread wisdomE - Empower colleaguesE - Elevate workplace cultureD - Develop leaders----------------------------------Hi there, I'm Rob.Ask me about my awesome audit training.----------------------------------

Many people think that if they had to fend for themselves then everyone else should have to do the same Robert Berry but nothing could be further from the truth. Your granny was very very wise and she's right: helping someone else when you can't help yourself really is one of the best things ever. PS: So, where's your wine? Just wondering 😁

I learn a lot when I help people. It’s never a waste of time. I think for me…it’s more when people cross a line and it becomes exploitation. That mostly happens when I don’t set boundaries or have we’re not aligned in terms of expectations. Robert Berry

We often rise by lifting others, but can't life them if we don't first lift ourselves. It's a win-win when we do both.

Are you in good hands? How would you know?Look friends, I'm an internal auditor, my goal is to make sure that the stakeholders I support are in good hands.Seems like that should be easy, right? But how many of us are completely unaware of those looking out for us?As children, we often rebel against proper parental support. As adults, we run from some corporate rules that actuallyhelp more than hurt. Then, at some point, the light bulb comes on and we get it.At least for most of us.So to those of you (especially my fellow auditors) who are not appreciated forplacing people in good hands, continue doing the right thing.Eventually it will make sense.Anybody remember the commercial...You're in Good Hands With AllState?Do you put people in good hands?----------------------------------Hi there, I'm Rob.I teach people (especially auditors)how to become awesome.----------------------------------

Everyone thought I was crazy when I yelled at our client.Sure he was quirky and strange, but he didn't deserve that. One of my colleagues kicked me under the table. But I continued speaking loudly. You see, he recently told me thatthe he stared intently at people's lips because he was losing his hearing. I guess he was trying to read lips.As if you could just learn it overnight. He was afraid to tell anyone.Afriad of being judged. He stopped me after the meeting:"𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸."I responded,"𝗡𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴."We had become friends and could joke like that, but I didn't understand why he didn't just say something. When he finally did, the secret whispers got worse.I don't understand this behavior.Quirks can be cool. They also help us better understand people.I have a habit of fidgeting with something in my hand when I talk to people.I've been judged for it.But it actually helps me focus on the coveration I'm having with you. When it comes to quirks,I believe it's important to • understand ours, • communicate them to others and• be open to other people'sHow can we better understand and communicate our QUIRK?Q - Question: What makes you tick.U - Understand: Why these quirks exist.I - Inform: Others in a non-intrusive way.R - Reflect: How quirks impact your interactions.K - Keep it real: Embrace authenticityWhat are you quirks?

Taking risks is not reckless.I know what you're thinking...I'm an auditor, so we can't take any risks. This thinking is wrong. Here's the thing about risks—they're double-edged swords. They can either lead to groundbreaking rewards or... well, let's just say some less-than-stellar outcomes. 🎢But if we naysay everything our clients attempt, our organizations will never experience the rewards of taking risks. So what’s the secret sauce? Calculated Risks! 💡Without them, there's no innovation, no progress, and certainly no advancement. So how do we understand risk before rejecting them?𝗥: Research thoroughly.𝗜: Identify potential impacts.𝗦: Strategize your approach.𝗞: Keep monitoring outcomes. What's the risk you took?

Difficult people aren't misunderstood; they're just difficult.Ever had that colleague who seemed to have a PhD in creating chaos? Some folks thrive on making things harder than they need to be. But there's a HUGE difference between a difficult topic and a difficult person. Imagine trying to fix your car 🚗 (difficult topic) vs. trying to fix your car while someone keeps hiding your tools 🛠️ (difficult person). Difficult topics sharpen our skills, broaden our knowledge, and drive us forward. But difficult people... 🙈So how do you SPOT a difficult person?Well they...S: Sabotages progressP: Pessimistic outlookO: Overcomplicate issuesT: Talk over othersNext time you encounter someone who's more of an obstacle than an asset, you'll know exactly how to SPOT them.Check out this clip from the latest episode of the Audit Bites podcast where I talk about what my grandmother said about difficult people. And check out the full episode for more audit insights.https://lnkd.in/gdWZZhfQHow do you SPOT difficult people?

Can playing games make you better at your job? 🕹️👾Many believe that games are distractions, but what if they are more than that? Ever heard someone say, "I'm just being brutally honest," and then proceed to crush your soul? Yeah... not cool! 🙅♂️ From “That was the worst presentation ever!” to “You’re not cut out for this job,” brutal honesty often misses the mark.Brutal honesty is just an excuse for being rude.I'll never forget when I received tough feedback from a colleague who genuinely cared about my growth. It wasn’t what I wanted to hear—but it was exactly what I needed—and it didn’t sting because of their kindness. In auditing and beyond, true honesty builds bridges rather than burning them.I once had an audit client tell me..."I don't like what you do."I was initially hurt.He then continued,"But I like how you do it."Here’s how we approach honesty at That Audit Guy:H - Helpful insightsO - Open communicationN - Nurturing adviceE - Empathetic deliveryS - Supportive languageT - Truth with tactLet’s make our industry better by delivering honest feedback with heart. 💖Recently I got to meet one of my kind and caring friends in person for the first time. ⤵️Who's a kind and caring person in your life?----------------------------------Hi there, I'm Rob.I teach people (especially auditors)how to become awesome.----------------------------------

NEVER ASSUME is probably the worst advice I've ever given and received.Assumptions are like fire; they can either cook your meal or burn down the house. 🔥Let's have a real talk about assumptions. We all make them, right? Sometimes they're spot on, other times... not so much. The trick is finding that sweet spot where our assumptions guide us without leading us astray.I remember a time when I was knee-deep in an audit. Based on preliminary data, I assumed there might be some discrepancies in the client's inventory records. Instead of jumping to conclusions and causing unnecessary panic, I decided to test my assumption thoroughly. Turns out, I was right. This time. But imagine if I'd been wrong without any backup data? I don't always get it right, but I try to manage and validate my assumptions carefully.Sometimes you have to ASSUME:A - Assess the DataS -Seek Multiple PerspectivesS -Scrutinize Underlying BiasesU - Undergo Rigorous TestingM - Maintain FlexibilityE - Evaluate Outcomes RegularlyHere I assumed we were finished taking photos, but I was wrong 🤣----------------------------------Hi there, I'm Rob.I teach people (especially auditors)how to become awesome.----------------------------------
