Six year-old Amarli lives with a rare chromosomal disorder that has only been documented a handful of times in medical literature. She is globally delayed and is at constant risk of respiratory failure. Her care needs are considerable: she requires round-the-clock care, day and night, by a team of support workers who are hand-picked for their experience with high-needs patients. Such a high calibre of support at home is, as anyone in the business knows, difficult to find. Just as importantly, however, these support workers provide Amarli’s mother, herself a Registered Nurse who continues to shoulder much of Amarli’s care, with a much-needed opportunity to sleep. Nurse Next Door Macarthur is privileged to be part of the small army that is seeing to Amarli’s care. We are privileged to be enabling their whole family to continue living together at home and to live a life of possibility. Each new milestone that Amarli reaches while her mother raises awareness about her daughter’s condition is inspirational. Part One: Nurse Next Door Macarthur was privileged to be part of the first anniversary meeting of the South West Sydney Support Coordinators Network, where speakers discussed one of my favourite subjects: advocacy. Having worked on numerous campaigns in the past, I know how valuable it is to listen to the personal stories of those with lived experience. It is essential to connecting with one’s humanity. It’s the wake-up call many people need, and I’m glad to help raise this awareness with the community of support coordinators and allied health workers in south west Sydney. Tony lives with cerebellar ataxia, which causes poor coordination and muscle control. Without help, he is a constant falls risk, which keeps his family on edge.Thanks to Nurse Next Door Macarthur, he’s able enjoy all the creature comforts of life at home. Today, we went shopping for his granddaughter’s birthday gifts before taking in a Chicken Caesar at a local cafe (I call it his Chicken Caesar Safari as he is determined to try every Chicken Caesar between #Camden and #Campbelltown). In the process of #MakingLivesBetter, how do we go the extra mile to provide a Wow Customer Experience? Well you see, Tony’s family is very closely tied to MMA, but he hardly gets to talk to other people about it. And me? Well if you’ve ever heard me talk about martial arts, you’ll know it is the only thing I obsess about as much as photography. We’re a perfect match* 😁*Don’t worry, I won’t spar with him 😅
